PVA mixture is applied first to the cloth hinge of the end sheet, and the super is folded down onto it.

As you may recall, we trimmed the super a little smaller in width than the end sheet hinge, and here the reason for doing this can be seen. If left wider than the hinge, it would naturally get into the excess adhesive on the scrap paper when we folded it over. By the time we finished applying the adhesive to the super (next step), it would be sticking to the paper, and the clinging pieces of paper would create unsightly irregularities under the paste-down (this is the show side of the super). So this mess is easily avoided by simply trimming it back earlier in the procedure.
